Anyone up for a game?
This was the "granddaddy" of board games that stared me off into the world of good strategy games. Christmas, 1986 !!! Are there enough takers who would like to play on next Saturday night starting at around 5:00 PM? Is Thrafgig man enough to show? Will the O'Wanker try to get off the British Isles and get into the fight? Who's in?
=D

If you decide to play a real global domination game call me, I really do not go in for Axis and allies.

Have to agree with Thafgig, though it was one of the first military board games I played it is heavily skewed and quickly outgrown. We did try to play the new edition several months ago sadly the game ended bottom of turn two as they haven't fixed any of the imbalances. It took longer to set up and clean up then it did to play <lesigh>.

So nostalgia loses out to aged, hardened reason. Perhaps another idea another time . . . .

Well, A&A's unbalanced because the real war was unbalanced. Once Hitler invaded Russia, it was all over but the burning. I've played plenty of games where Japan ended up economically powerful enough to force a draw, if not an outright win.
I'm curious what edition PG_Monova was playing, because they've been tinkering with various rules over the last four editions, any of which seem like they would affect the balance in significant ways.
Alternately, what about Attack! ?
I mostly play indie RPGs, euro boardgames and small-press DIY wargames, so I have no armies and no miniatures. The total displacement of the Star Kingdom of Lionshead's active fleet is, however, well over seven million tons.

Hmmm. So many tings to say. This is not meant to be a flame due to that fact that I am not 100% sure what you mean by the fact that real war is unbalanced and then refering to Germany's invasion of Russia as it was all over at that point. This is hardly the case Hitler and his staff made several other errors that ultimately led to his demise the Invasion of Russia was a turning point but something that could not have been overcome had not several other factors been involved. But to continue this line is to argue what if's and frankly H. Turtledove does better then anyone.
On to your comment about the game. You seem to be saying that the game is unbalanced because it is based on reality at the same time you are saying you tinker with the rules to balance it out. I don't want to play a game that is set up for a specific outcome and that requires me to tinker with the rules to make it balanced. The first couple of rounds of the game must be played a specific way which also is somewhat according to history, Hmmm not much fun there. As we all know that outcome.
As for Japan becoming an economic power house I to have seen this, usually when playing with several new players and giving them the stronger countries to play. Tinker with rules is fine but I am not one to sit and waste my time to figure out how to make a game better, when I have so many others to pick from. These do not require any more time then showing up and setting up.
We were last playing the anniversary edition. I think I am more likely to play Memoir '44 at leastt there it is not claiming to be balanced but you have to play both sides to decide the winner.
