Yeah, I know.  Nobody plays them.

I've been messing around with Majestic 12's Starmada rules for the last little while, including stitching it together with the Victory By Any Means Campaign System as a scenario generator (being a fan of David Weber's Honorverse, I prefer a larger context for multimillion ton starships pounding each other into scrap ).

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in giving Starmada a try.  Starship minis are hard to come by this side of the pond, so we may be limited to counters or card models at first.  Ideally I'd like to see about getting a grand VBAM game going and using it to generate Starmada scenarios a la Federation & Empire, but you know, I'm crazy.

I mostly play indie RPGs, euro boardgames and small-press DIY wargames, so I have no armies and no miniatures. The total displacement of the Star Kingdom of Lionshead's active fleet is, however, well over seven million tons.

Check out these: Firestorm Armada

They are now available from our local supplier.

I f you're interested we can get it in within a week typically.

If anyone else is interested take a look at these as well: The Uncharted Seas

Both have some very cool looking mini's.

I like the look of The Uncharted Seas more, but both look very cool.

I was huge into Silent Death, but sadly ICE has had zero support for the game. I still have all the rulebooks and about 5 dozen fighter minis, but its hard to motivate myself to bring them out to play since the game has been treated so badly by the company.

If you are interested in beer-and-pretzels tactical starfighters, Silent Death by far is your best option - If you want more "fleet" and capital ship action then Starmada might be a better choice - I wouldn't rule out Jason's suggestion above, the minaitures look great, but I have no idea what the game is like aside from that.

Truth be told, the HK doesn't really have a favoured space combat genre game at the moment. It would be interesting to see something develop towards one system for fun.

Well, ICE has zero support for the game by virtue of going belly-up in 1999.  Mjolnir's just reprinting their old stuff indefinitely now.  Besides, Silent Death has nothing on Star Strike ;-)

Starmada doesn't lend itself well to traditional miniatures gaming because it's very DIY indie small press - the game is whatever you want to kitbash it into, and you can design your own weapons as well as the ships themselves.  That's the reason I prefer it over, say, Full Thrust, which is probably its nearest neighbour.

I'm a big fan of military/naval SF, and one reason I'm not so much into the pure tactical games is that either you're playing a canned, invariate set of "historical" scenarios or else a balanced scenario with predefined objectives with no context.  That's why I love the idea of VBAMat the strategic level interfacing with Starmada at the tactical level, but if you thought Twilight Imperium took a long time to play...

In the interests of getting things going, Full Thrust is very similar to Starmada and the rules are free, and there are miniatures still in press for it.  If anyone's interested they can check it out here.

I mostly play indie RPGs, euro boardgames and small-press DIY wargames, so I have no armies and no miniatures. The total displacement of the Star Kingdom of Lionshead's active fleet is, however, well over seven million tons.
