PG_Moonova wrote:Let me start by saying I am a confirmed Atheist. I have had conversations with several "Religious types" most of them civil. My wife who is Catholic (non-practicing) recently laughed at me when I discovered that all those that I consider close friends are in fact religious. (This is going somewhere).
When I first read this post I had a WTF moment, Thomas where is your head at. Then I did *gasp* what most forumites never do I reread the post. I saw several things that I thought made this post acceptable to me as a non-religious person. One Thomas stated he was offering this openly to those who wanted it. he was not coming over to my gaming table to say "Hey Derrick, go tthis great guy in the back room he is going to pray for your lost soul. Come quick". He made his offer here to everyone who *wanted* it, and to those that didn't he thank you for letting him share his story as to why he wanted to offer this.
The next thing I noticed was that it was in a back room. Now I have been privy to the area behind HK so I think this is where people got confused. Many think the back room is where all the terrain is stored, and it is usually refered to as such. Thomas in fact meant a different room in an office of a different business serparate from HK but sharing a connecting door. To which I thought great I can't see them and there chanting/prayer/mumbo jumbo will be removed from my ungodly ears (this is toungue in cheeck humour).
I then had a chance to talk to Thomas before he "event" took place and could see the deep passionate and honest belief that he was doing everyone a great favour by introducing Tim to he community. he also believed completely that Tim would in someway help others. Again he knows I don't believe, but I accept his belief much as I hope he accepts my lack of belief.
I have to say given this I am glad he offered it out there. I am sure that somehow this guy has helped someone and while doing this he didn't disturb my gaming to the point that until I noticed that Thomas was around on Monday I had forgotten this event was taking place. Then I remembered and shrugged and quickly went back to helping two people learn the joys of one of my favourite games.
Now did his staff toe the line and not rock the boat. Who cares. If they don't want to stand up for themselves it is hardly our places to assume they need someone to stand up for them. Their is a government organization that does that. Do you as some who has no faith, or a different faith suffer because something is going on in a room nearby in the same building that doesn't align with your faith? Well I have news for you that building has not one but two rooms that are regularly used for religious meetings/services even on days other then Sunday.
Again I am atheist I have argued the validity of religion with a friend who holds a Masters in Theology, and another who is a former minister among others. I freely admit that sitting in a church gives me the willies. Yet I went to HK on Monday and didn't give two shakes as to this happening outside of my Visual and Auditory range. So why are all of you fighting over something that had no effect on your time in the HK. It is not like he made you walk through te main doors and recite some crazy verse from a book written about a guy born 2010 years ago.
I am sorry Thomas and you other religious people if you find this offense I did not mean to belittle your faith only to point out that my lack of faith was in no way hampered by your ......whatever you want to call it.
Its a sad sad day when you are completely right. I think it was blown up into something it is not. I would be upset if there was someone coming to the boards and telling me that I need to be prayed for or that to be a customer here and play here you need to pray with Tim. It's not at all what is going on. Thomas found something that helped him through a rough time and shared it with everyone. I see no problem with that and greatly appreciate it.
As for the conversations about bring religion into the workplace. I do agree that religion should not play a part in your business decisions, however, religion can be brought into the work place in circumstances. It's a grey area obviously but some examples.....
Priest came to my grandfathers work to bless his new office... Is that bad?
Your business sells Bibles and other religious based knick knacks.....
How about a little bit of a harder one. Let take Rogers, major corporation, own the Skydome (Rogers Centre). They invite the Pope to speak... are they then mixing religion with business....
I just point this out as an example. If my boss came to me and told me to get promoted I would have to stop being Catholic and join jim bob's religion of awesomeness, then obviously that is bring religiong into the work place. Am I still bringing religion into the work place if I tell a story about something funny that happened at church on Sunday?
I think it is great that Thomas is saying IF YOU would like, your are more then welcome to use my facilities in the back to discuss and have someone to pray with you. Not only that I'll arrange it for you IF YOU would like. There were no musts in his offer. I even sent a message to Thomas asking some questions about it. I think it sounds like a great thing. I'm very open to new experiences and Thomas is offering one. You don't have to take it. You don't have to accept it. It's not being thrust on you. It's a simple post saying there is a guy named Tim, he prayed with me and I feel better now because of it. If it's something you may be interested in, feel free to come on by. It's not evasive. It's not like Thomas is coming to your front door, handing you a pamphlet and telling you all about how are praying wrong and the only way you are going to get into heaven, if it's your goal or not, is to come to my church, drink Kool-Aid and have some brownies. Oh, and the Kool-Aid, it might be poisined, but you will do whatever I tell you too, so drink it!!!!
